Be sure to check out (and subscribe to) our revamped YouTube channel!

Android Central on YouTube

A quick heads up, boys and girls, that we're now taking advantage of YouTube's updated channel design. More (and better) playlists, more customization and, perhaps most important -- an intro video from yours truly. Easiest way to get my face off your screen? Subscribe!

Yes. That's basically blackmail. Or something. Subscribe you'll not see that video of me (that's at Grand Central Station, by the way), getting you to that all-important Android content even sooner.

Anyhoo, check it out. We're still tweaking the design a bit, but Google's definitely making things easier on the content providers (that's us) so we can bring a better experience to the consumers. (That's you.)

Peep These Beautiful Sculptures of Electronics Encased in Resin

Amy Brener describes her sculptures as “totemic structures that resemble artifacts of an imagined future.”

I think they look like a shimmering reinterpretation of Arthur C. Clarke’s super-evolved robotic monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Or maybe a prototype of Sandbenders, the gemstone and resin computer system from Idoru.

Brener, who is Canadian-born but New York-based, uses fairly simple materials to create her works: cast resin imbued with neon and pastel pigment. Before the resin cures, she drops all kinds of electronic refuse—including circuit boards and keyboards—into the mold, which is usually lined with fabric to create distressed edges and wrinkles in the surface of the model. If you look closely, you’ll see clusters of diodes, fresnel lenses, and an old Nokia brick phone on the fossil-like surfaces.

Brener's an artist, first and foremost, but her sculptures also hint at an imagined set of technologies from the not-so-distant future. She explains:

Some surfaces are ordered into compositions that allude to touch-screen platforms, energy cells and the digital logic of a different reality. Other surfaces are left to chance: to crystallize, crack under pressure and weather with time... Some sculptures may be markers for an unknown border, while others hint at vehicular function.

We all know what old technologies really look like once they've been taken out behind the proverbial barn. But wouldn’t it be lovely if this were the reality?

If you're in LA, you'll be able to check some of these out in person next month at Brener's upcoming show. More on that here.

Torus is an impressive 3D Tetris game powered by HTML5

torus
As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You're usually looking at a "wall" of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn't really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus' 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It's also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It's an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

Leaked Android Music app images and hands-on review

Android Music player
This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled 'version 3', is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish -- and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

If you don't have Android 2.3 -- or don't want to root your phone to install the leaked Music app -- take a look through our gallery, and then read on for our initial hands-on impressions.

EE's 4G LTE comes to 12 new markets

EE

Total EE 4G cities reaches 62, carrier says

EE, the UK's first and currently only 4G LTE network operator, sends word that it's just flipped the switch on LTE in another twelve towns across the country.

From today, EE's 4G services are available in Aylesbury, Berkhamsted, Billericay, Blackpool, Brentwood, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Lytham St Annes, Marlow, Pontefract, Thame and Windsor. The list of new markets shows LTE spreading further into rural areas, and EE says its 4G network now covers more than 50 percent of the UK population. By the end of June, the operator says it'll have reached a further 18 markets, and aims to bring its coverage up to 70 percent of the population by the end of the year.

EE is sure to face more competition in the coming months, as rival networks launch their own 4G offerings based on the 800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum auctioned off earlier in the year. Vodafone, O2 and Three are expected to launch LTE networks of their own later this year, in some cases possibly as early as this summer.

Press release is after the break.

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that's designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week's use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC's release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it's definitely worth trying out if you're still using Android's stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we'll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

A sneak peek at the next version of Android Market and Music app

Android Honeycomb'ish smartphone Music appUpdate: Tech From 10 seems to be offline -- but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a 'Content rating,' but that's it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps -- most notably, there's a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).

Also available from the test Android Market is 'Google Gallery 3D New 10.2', 'Google - Camera v12' and 'Google Desk Clock 10' -- but, curiously, all of the apps refused to launch on Tech From 10's Galaxy S (Vibrant) smartphone. Are they Honeycomb apps? Or, more likely, are they destined for the next Android smartphone OS, Ice Cream?

If you want to try out the new Honeycombish Music app, Tech From 10 has made the APK available for download. You can also download the three Google apps, if you want to have a poke around.

How Apple’s Developer Conference Grew Too Big for Its Own Developers

How Developers Coded in 1985

Programmer John Graham-Cumming tells a fascinating story about what coding like was back in 1985. Unlike today's programmers who wear hoodies, down energy drinks and use a paper thin computer, programmers in 1985 had to code by hand... with actual paper.
